Secondhand stock is sold as-is, so a two-minute inspection is the difference between a good buy and a regret. These are the checks worth doing on clothing before you take it to the counter at Raba Thrift Store.
- 1Check the armpits and inner thighs first — those wear out long before the rest of a garment does, and they are the two spots most people forget to look at.
- 2Run a zipper all the way up and down and do every button. A stuck zipper on a $6 jacket is a $20 repair at a tailor.
- 3Hold thin fabric up to the store lights. Pin-sized holes in cotton tees and thinning at the elbows show up instantly that way.
- 4Read the fibre content tag, not just the brand. Wool, leather, denim, and heavy cotton are what survive being secondhand; thin polyester blends usually arrive already tired.
- 5Ignore the size on the label and check the actual measurements against something you own. Sizing has drifted for decades, and older garments run noticeably smaller.
- 6Smell it. Smoke and mildew are the two odours that do not wash out reliably, and a musty coat will stay musty.
- 7For shoes, look at the tread wear pattern and press on the midsole. Uneven wear means the shoe has already moulded to somebody else's stride.
- 8Check that the sleeve and hem cuffs still have stretch. Blown-out ribbing is the fastest tell that a sweater is at the end of its life.
