How do you check electronics before you buy it?
Secondhand stock is sold as-is, so a two-minute inspection is the difference between a good buy and a regret. These are the checks worth doing on electronics before you take it to the counter at Raba Thrift Store.
- 1Ask at the counter before you commit. Testing a piece of electronics with a working outlet is a reasonable thing to ask for, and it turns a gamble into a decision.
- 2Inspect the power cord end to end. Nicks, tape repairs, bent prongs, or a cord that has been pulled out of the strain relief at the housing are all reasons to walk away.
- 3On speakers, press gently on the cone and look at the foam surround where the cone meets the frame. Crumbling foam surrounds are the classic failure on vintage speakers — repairable with a re-foam kit, but factor in the cost.
- 4Open the battery compartment on anything battery-powered. White or green crust means corrosion, and corrosion that has reached the contacts usually means the device is done.
- 5For consoles, check that the controller ports are not loose and that the AV or HDMI cable and power brick are included. Sourcing a proprietary power supply separately often costs more than the console.
- 6For small kitchen appliances, confirm the removable parts are all there — the carafe, the blade assembly, the lid, the gasket. A blender missing its blade is a jar.
- 7Look at the vents and fan openings. Heavy dust and nicotine staining tells you the machine ran hot and dirty for years.
- 8Give it a shake. Anything rattling loose inside a sealed housing is a part that came off something.
Vintage audio in the Fraser Valley
Older stereo gear is one of the more interesting things that comes through a Chilliwack thrift store. Fraser Valley homes have been lived in for a long time, and basement systems from the 1970s and 80s — wood-cabinet speakers, silver-faced receivers, turntables — get cleared out when a house changes hands. That gear was frequently built to a standard that mid-range new equipment is not, which is why people specifically hunt for it. It also arrives untested and unrestored, so the buying checks above matter more here than in any other section of the store.
What we do not carry
Raba Thrift Store does not take phones or laptops as donations, so we do not sell them. The same goes for anything visibly broken or unsafe — cracked housings, damaged cords, missing grounding pins. If you are looking specifically for a computer or a smartphone, an electronics recycler or a refurbisher is the right stop rather than us.
Donating electronics
Raba Thrift Store accepts working electronics: audio gear, speakers, consoles, small kitchen appliances, media players, and the cables and remotes that go with them. Please bring the accessories — a console without its power supply or a blender without its blade is not something anyone can use. Phones and laptops are a no, as is anything broken. Drop off at 46191 Yale Rd any day between 10 AM and 7 PM, or book a free pickup. Donors receive a 30% off coupon; as a for-profit store we cannot issue tax receipts.
