How do you check furniture before you buy it?
Secondhand stock is sold as-is, so a two-minute inspection is the difference between a good buy and a regret. These are the checks worth doing on furniture before you take it to the counter at Raba Thrift Store.
- 1Measure your doorway, stairwell, and vehicle before you leave the house, then bring a tape measure with you. The single most common thrift-furniture mistake is buying a piece that will not physically get into the room it was bought for.
- 2Lift one corner. Solid wood is heavy and sounds dull when you knock it; particleboard is light and sounds hollow. Solid wood can be sanded and refinished forever, and a chipped particleboard edge cannot be repaired at all.
- 3Open and close every drawer to the back of its travel. Drawers that stick, drop, or grind mean worn runners, which is a cheap fix on wood slides and a headache on cheap metal ones.
- 4Put weight on it. Sit in the chair, lean on the table, push the shelf sideways. Racking — that diagonal wobble — usually means loose joints, which is fixable with glue and clamps if the joinery is wood, and not worth it if it is staples.
- 5Look for water damage: white rings, bubbled or lifting veneer, and swollen bottom edges on legs. Swelling at the base means the piece stood in water and the particleboard core is already gone.
- 6Check the underside and the back. Makers stamp the underside of tabletops, inside drawer sides, and the back panel, and that is also where you spot old repairs the seller never mentions.
- 7Sniff drawers and cabinets with the doors closed for a minute first. Smoke and mustiness live inside enclosed furniture and are much harder to remove than a scratch.
- 8Bring a blanket and straps if you drive a truck. Unpadded furniture bouncing in a box liner arrives home with more damage than it left with.

Raba Thrift Store does not accept mattresses, box springs, sofas, couches, or beds as donations, which means we never have them for sale either — if that is what you are after, a larger secondhand outlet is a better use of your afternoon. What we do get is a steady flow of dining chairs, small tables, bookcases, desks, nightstands, lamps, mirrors, and framed art from Fraser Valley households that are downsizing, renovating, or clearing out a rental. Because every piece is a one-off, furniture is the category where showing up matters most: there is no back stock, and once a table goes out the door there is not another one behind it.
Why used furniture is worth the trip
A solid-wood dining chair or bookcase built decades ago is generally made from better material than a comparably priced new one, and it has already survived the years that would have destroyed a flat-pack equivalent. It also stays out of the Chilliwack landfill, which is the other half of why we do this. Once a piece is confirmed you can drop it off any day between 10 AM and 7 PM, or book a free pickup and we will come to you — seven days a week, no minimum, no fee.
